Nate Richardson Joins AOL As President Of AOL Live

I'm pleased to announce that Nate Richardson has joined AOL as President of AOL Live. Nate's background in digital media, e-commerce and start-ups brings a combination of experiences that will allow us to build a truly unique, differentiated and compelling AOL Live product.

While my first experience meeting Nate was on a panel at the LGBT Center when he was CEO of paidContent, I had heard of his reputation as the person behind Yahoo! Finance's success.

Nate arrived at Yahoo! via the acquisition of a payments company, and went on to deliver one of the most financially successful and dominant digital businesses of the last decade.

Nate took two detours, including what he describes as a cameo at Dow Jones as Head of Digital and a mind-cleanser running the largest non-governmental organization in post-war Liberia for the International Rescue Committee, where he had a staff of 500 and a need to learn how to build his own satellite system.

After the panel, I recruited Nate to conceive of and launch Gilt Man and later Gilt City. Nate built two of Gilt Groupe's most valuable businesses by establishing differentiated propositions, a strong editorial point of view in merchandising, and team cultures that are legendary for their creativity, passion and commitment.

Most recently, Nate was CEO of #waywire, a video curation platform that he co-founded with Mayor Cory Booker. His time at #waywire served as a baptism into the fast evolving world of video.

Please help me welcome Nate to team AOL.

AOL Welcomes Luke Beatty as Head of Strategic Partnerships

I'm excited to announce that Luke Beatty is joining AOL as Head of Strategic Partnerships. In this newly created position, Luke will work with our business development, technology, advertising and content teams to create partnerships that will leverage outside thinking and resources to help build better products and services.

Luke's passion for the industry is coupled with deep roots in the digital media, content and tech spaces. His addition to the team is a great moment for us as we continue to open up AOL's content and capabilities to the best partners in the world.

His background includes Techstars – the world's leading seed fund accelerator located in Boulder – where he was the Managing Director; and Yahoo, where he was a VP and central business lead for its crowd-driven properties: Flickr, Yahoo Local, Yahoo Groups, Yahoo Answers and Yahoo Contributor Network in the Americas.

In 2004, Luke founded Associated Content, an extremely successful venture whose first investor was Tim Armstrong. Known as the first and the largest crowdsourcing content collection platform in the world, Associated Content enabled hundreds of thousands of individuals to publish and generate revenue from the millions of articles, videos and images they contributed and built the web's largest freelancer community and distributed that community's content to media partners including Reuters, Yahoo and Turner. Luke ran Associated Content until Yahoo acquired it in 2010.

We're confident Luke will make a huge impact at AOL and look forward to his leadership. Please join me in welcoming him to the team on September 9.

Ad Networks Best Practices

Today, the White House announced the Best Practices Guidelines for Ad Networks to Address Piracy and Counterfeiting (2013IPPractices.com). In an effort to address content owner concerns about ad networks providing revenue streams to websites engaged in piracy and counterfeiting, the guidelines will help ad networks establish a set of self-regulating best practices to address known infringing sites in their respective ad networks.

Some highlights from the guidelines:

  • Ad Networks are committed to maintaining high quality standards for advertisers and publishers and at the same time respecting intellectual property rights to maintain a healthy Internet and promote innovation.
  • The best practices include (among other things):
    • Maintaining and posting policies intended to discourage or prevent, to the extent possible, websites that are principally dedicated to selling counterfeit goods, engaging in copyright piracy or otherwise violating laws from participating in the ad network;
    • Accepting and processing proper notices from rights holders regarding websites participating in the Ad Network alleged to be principally dedicated to selling counterfeit goods or engaging in copyright piracy and to have no substantial non-infringing uses; and
    • Providing guidance for the content of a proper notice and identifying the designated agent to receive such notice.
  • The best practices are intended to encourage and supplement, not replace, responsible and direct independent actions taken by intellectual property owners to enforce their intellectual property rights and are not intended to impose a duty on any Ad Network to monitor its network to identify offending websites.

As part of this initiative, AOL, along with Yahoo, Microsoft and Google, established this set of self-regulating best practices to address known infringing sites in their respective ad networks.

AOL has been building trust with our users for more than 28 years. And we have been equally committed to maintaining high quality standards for advertisers and publishers – taking piracy and counterfeiting seriously. Many of the best practices guidelines very much mirror what we have been doing all along at AOL and, consequently, we quickly supplemented our current practice and are now in compliance with the best practices. Advertising.com boasts one of the best networks in terms of quality, which is part of our success story, and this initiative will reinforce that. I commend the collaborative efforts of the participating Ad Networks and the industry to help combat online piracy.

AOL, Microsoft and Yahoo! Announce Advertising Agreement in Canada

Following our announcement of a display advertising partnership agreement between AOL, Microsoft and Yahoo! in the United States; and between AOL and Yahoo! in Canada, we are excited to announce this deal has now been extended to include Microsoft in Canada.

We have partnered with Microsoft and Yahoo! to meet advertiser demand and provide easier access to high quality online display inventory. This agreement should dramatically improve the process of buying and selling premium online inventory in Canada. Under terms of the deal, AOL will soon have the ability to offer premium non-reserved owned and operated display inventory from Microsoft and the Yahoo! Network Plus to our advertising customers.

Similarly, Microsoft and Yahoo! will also be able to offer AOL's owned and operated, and third party non-reserved inventory to their own advertising customers, and deliver commensurate value to their publisher partners, as well.

For more information, please read the AOL corporate blog post from when the deal was formally announced in the US.
