Kim Kadlec Joins AOL To Lead Global Partnerships

Today marks another exciting day for AOL. I'm thrilled to announce world-class global marketing veteran Kim Kadlec has joined the AOL team as Head of Relationship Management. In this role, Kim will focus on building strategic distribution partnerships with leading, large-scale organizations for our content, brands and platforms around the world.

AOL has built strong positions in news, lifestyle, tech, autos and entertainment, as well as breakthrough and culturally significant content platforms, such as The Huffington Post, MAKERS, Crunchbase, Moviefone, and Mapquest. Kim's role will enable us to most effectively leverage those global content and technology assets to diversify our traffic and distribution mix, develop and grow our consumer brands, and provide meaningful insights to our product, programming and revenue teams.

Kim has a diverse background – including groundbreaking work in building brands on a global scale and navigating the shift by advertisers into digital media – and we have first-hand knowledge of her innovative work. Previously the Worldwide Vice President, Global Marketing Group at Johnson & Johnson, she introduced an updated version of the "4 P's" of marketing – a longstanding pillar for the industry: purpose, presence, proximity and partnership.

With unique visitor growth on our properties for six consecutive quarters, AOL is in a position to become the best partnership company in the industry – and we can't wait to see what the future will hold as Kim leads these efforts globally.

AOL NY Hosts "Women in Tech" Initiative

AOL is excited to be one of the first companies to partner with the NY Department of Education for the "Women in Tech" initiative, a new program for female software engineering students. Spearheaded by Rachel Haot, the city's Chief Digital Officer, the program aims to connect female leaders at New York tech companies with middle school and high school girls from the city's 22 pilot computer science schools.

We kicked-off the initiative yesterday, as the AOL NY office hosted a group of 30 from the High School of Telecommunication Arts and Technology in Brooklyn. The field trip included an in-depth tour of the AOL studio and HuffPost Live set, followed by an interactive panel moderated by Susan Lyne, where the girls had an opportunity to hear from several women working across different business sectors of AOL.

We believe that events like the "Women in Tech" program help girls recognize the myriad pathways available in the technology field. Students enjoyed hearing from the panel of strong, trailblazing female tech leaders here at AOL including Huffington Post, while the school reiterated that it's valuable for girls to be able to see themselves in engineering and business roles of the speakers.

Leadership Changes Reflect AOL's Deep Roster of Talent

There are many reasons to be excited about our prospects as a company, but perhaps none greater than the level of talent we have at AOL across the board.

With that said, I'm excited to announce two changes within our leadership structure as we head into the final quarter of the year:

  • Maureen Sullivan will be taking over the leadership of AOL Homepage, effective immediately. You all know the tremendous work underway to revitalize AOL.com, and I'm excited to have Maureen take the helm at such a pivotal time. She is a tremendous brand builder and a results-oriented executive.
    In overseeing our Women's and Lifestyle Group, she has led the development and growth of the MAKERS brand as a global digital platform for documenting and celebrating the stories of extraordinary women. In addition, Maureen has led a reinvention of our Lifestyle group, developing unique brands covering weddings, food and style. She has generated great momentum across the board for the entire group this year evidenced by StyleList topping its category for eight consecutive months.

    She will continue to oversee the Women's and Lifestyle Group, as well.
  • As we continue to invest and grow our international footprint, Graham Moysey will take on the new role of Head of International and relocate from Toronto to our London office. Graham was appointed Head of International for the O&O business earlier this year. In his new role, he will oversee all international business for AOL with a dual reporting structure to me (for AOL Brands) and to Bob Lord (for AOL Networks). He will also partner with Bud on the Subscription business outside the U.S.
    During his tenure at AOL, Graham has illustrated the ability to collaborate across borders and across a variety of business units, and we are confident he will bring that spirit to his new role. Graham will be supported by the strong leadership team we have in place in our offices in Europe as well as in Tel Aviv, Bangalore and Tokyo.

Nate Richardson Joins AOL As President Of AOL Live

I'm pleased to announce that Nate Richardson has joined AOL as President of AOL Live. Nate's background in digital media, e-commerce and start-ups brings a combination of experiences that will allow us to build a truly unique, differentiated and compelling AOL Live product.

While my first experience meeting Nate was on a panel at the LGBT Center when he was CEO of paidContent, I had heard of his reputation as the person behind Yahoo! Finance's success.

Nate arrived at Yahoo! via the acquisition of a payments company, and went on to deliver one of the most financially successful and dominant digital businesses of the last decade.

Nate took two detours, including what he describes as a cameo at Dow Jones as Head of Digital and a mind-cleanser running the largest non-governmental organization in post-war Liberia for the International Rescue Committee, where he had a staff of 500 and a need to learn how to build his own satellite system.

After the panel, I recruited Nate to conceive of and launch Gilt Man and later Gilt City. Nate built two of Gilt Groupe's most valuable businesses by establishing differentiated propositions, a strong editorial point of view in merchandising, and team cultures that are legendary for their creativity, passion and commitment.

Most recently, Nate was CEO of #waywire, a video curation platform that he co-founded with Mayor Cory Booker. His time at #waywire served as a baptism into the fast evolving world of video.

Cyndi Stivers Joins AOL as Editor-In-Chief of AOL.com

It's my pleasure to announce that AOL has hired Cyndi Stivers, a decorated journalist and digital media expert, to join our team as Editor-in-Chief of AOL.com.

In her new role reporting to me, she will drive all editorial and programming across the AOL homepage, all associated apps and syndicated feeds.

She joins us from the Columbia Journalism Review, where she was the Editor-in-Chief. Her award-winning resume prior to that includes senior editorial and management roles with Entertainment Weekly, Martha Stewart Omnimedia, Time Out New York, and Premiere.

There were many characteristics that cemented Cyndi as our top choice including her programming vision, a strong creative track record, and a knack for mentoring editorial talent.

As we evolve AOL.com as a content destination, we will look to Cyndi to ensure the site showcases the most compelling stories relevant to our viewers and drive a distinctive editorial voice. We'll also be relying on her creativity to help us ignite our live programming and add more opportunities for visitors to engage with each other around our content.

Susan Lyne, CEO of AOL's Brand Group, has worked with Cyndi twice before. In her words: "I know first hand that Cyndi will bring world-class editorial leadership and creative thinking to this role with AOL.com. Our entire stable of brands will benefit from her management of the homepage's reach to help drive network wide events to showcase everything AOL has to offer."
