AOL Artists Adds More Summer Canvases

We are closing this season's ongoing Summer Series of canvases with two breathtaking paintings by alumni AOL Artist Chrissy Angliker. "Shore Side" and "Sunflower" evoke the heat of August, the beauty of the season, and are dripping with color.

Chrissy Angliker, a Brooklyn-based artist, was born in Zurich, Switzerland, and moved to the states when she was just 16 years old to study fine art at the Walnut Hill School in Natick, Massachusetts. Chrissy later went on to study Industrial Design at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. Her paintings have been exhibited internationally and she is currently represented by William Bennett gallery in New York and Knoerle & Baettig in Switzerland. Chrissy has been an active member of the AOL Artists community since 2010. She created beloved canvas "Dripping Color" and painted a permanent mural in AOL's San Francisco office that served as inspiration for "Shore Side." We couldn't be happier to have such an incredible artist as a part of our program.

MapQuest Shares Summer Travel Infographic

MapQuest just released its latest infographic to make it easier to visualize what people are searching for this summer. (Also see the data eye candy we shared in March.) Big data shows us our users love national parks, so we created parks.mapquest.com as a completely devoted resource for information on the 58 U.S. national parks. Many travelers visit these iconic destinations for overnight trips between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and even more stop at them along the way - called via points - the most popular being Yellowstone.

Even if consumers aren't planning a trip across country, MapQuest can help people plan a backyard escape that takes only an afternoon. Last summer, we helped more than 9 million people find a nearby place to get ice cream.

While we can't lower the high gas prices, we can tell people where the least expensive places to fuel up are. Gasprices.mapquest.com shares where to find the cheapest gas nearby, so, if travelers do go to the Grand Canyon, the trip there will be even easier by finding the least expensive gas stations and prices along the way.

Take a look at our Summer Travel infographic for more surprising stats and popular destinations because after all, life's about the journey, right?

AOL NYC Interns Get "Social"

Memorial day has come and gone, signifying that summer has officially begun! Instead of relaxing by the pool or soaking in the sun, approximately 100 interns have joined the bustling AOL team in our NYC offices this summer. Interns from around the nation can be found gaining valuable work experience in a wide variety of ways, whether it's spending time as associate editors at The Huffington Post, contributing to the AOL On Network's Ad Operations & Reporting team, or assisting the AOL Events team with the annual Cannes International Advertising Festival!

On Wednesday, June 13th, to kick off a fun summer of Intern Event Programming, nearly 50 interns gathered to learn more about Social Media from AOL's Director of Social Media & Internal Communications, Matt Knell. Matt and his social media savvy intern, Sarah Cooley, enlightened the crowd on what social media means to a business vs. an individual, as well as how different AOL brands and projects are best utilizing social media. Interns were particularly interested to learn that engagement and interaction numbers (i.e. "Facebook shares" and "retweets") are considered more important in determining social media's value than the number of Facebook "likes" or Twitter followers.

Following Matt's presentation, interns had an opportunity to munch on Baked by Melissa's Cupcakes while meeting fellow interns from teams with whom they might not typically work. AOL On Network's Paul Cooney (Fordham) and fellow intern Ally Shapiro, (Vanderbilt) who works on the Heidi Klum website, swapped stories about their contrasting experiences thus far, while Studio Now's Cooper Rowe (University of Kansas) and Huffington Post Celebrity's Chris Murphy (Princeton) discussed the best things to do in New York City this summer.
