AOL Canada Joins in Huge WE Day Event in Toronto

More than 20,000 young people turned out last Friday in Toronto for We Day, an event that aims to empower and inspire Canadian youth for social change, and AOL Canada and HuffPost Impact Canada were proud to be part of it. For the second year in a row, we partnered with Free the Children, which sponsors the annual event in Toronto and other Canadian cities.

HuffPost Impact Canada's "Be the Change" campaign featured a video booth activation for attendees to voice what they will do to drive social change locally, nationally or internationally. You'll find extensive coverage of We Day on HuffPost Impact Canada, including exclusive interviews with speakers and performers Nelly Furtado, Martin Sheen, Romeo Dallaire, Shawn Desman, Jennifer Hudson and Justin Trudeau, along with a We Day big page specific to the event.

We'll also participate in We Day in Vancouver on October 18 and Calgary on October 24. In support of Free the Children earlier this year, AOL Canada raised $25,000 to Adopt-a-Village in Kenya and sent seven employees to Africa to support the construction of a local school. AOL is very proud of the partnership and will continue efforts to support the Free the Children organization.

Check out full coverage of the event here, and the video below.

AOL NYC Interns Get "Social"

Memorial day has come and gone, signifying that summer has officially begun! Instead of relaxing by the pool or soaking in the sun, approximately 100 interns have joined the bustling AOL team in our NYC offices this summer. Interns from around the nation can be found gaining valuable work experience in a wide variety of ways, whether it's spending time as associate editors at The Huffington Post, contributing to the AOL On Network's Ad Operations & Reporting team, or assisting the AOL Events team with the annual Cannes International Advertising Festival!

On Wednesday, June 13th, to kick off a fun summer of Intern Event Programming, nearly 50 interns gathered to learn more about Social Media from AOL's Director of Social Media & Internal Communications, Matt Knell. Matt and his social media savvy intern, Sarah Cooley, enlightened the crowd on what social media means to a business vs. an individual, as well as how different AOL brands and projects are best utilizing social media. Interns were particularly interested to learn that engagement and interaction numbers (i.e. "Facebook shares" and "retweets") are considered more important in determining social media's value than the number of Facebook "likes" or Twitter followers.

Following Matt's presentation, interns had an opportunity to munch on Baked by Melissa's Cupcakes while meeting fellow interns from teams with whom they might not typically work. AOL On Network's Paul Cooney (Fordham) and fellow intern Ally Shapiro, (Vanderbilt) who works on the Heidi Klum website, swapped stories about their contrasting experiences thus far, while Studio Now's Cooper Rowe (University of Kansas) and Huffington Post Celebrity's Chris Murphy (Princeton) discussed the best things to do in New York City this summer.

Carla Buzasi and HuffPost UK Scoop British Media Award!

Carla Buzasi, Editor-in-Chief of The Huffington Post UK, has scooped the top individual award -- Media Innovator of the Year -- at the British Media Awards, recognizing innovation and excellence across the British media industry.

The judges deemed that Carla and The Huffington Post UK showcased a mixture of old-fashioned and modern editing, "incorporating original reporting and comments with a chorus of contributions from the audience in real-time." The Huffington Post UK was also highly commended in the 'Social Media and Marketing Innovation' and 'Digital Media Innovator of the Year' categories.

"I'm very proud that, just nine months after launch, HuffPost UK is being recognized in this way. The team works tirelessly to ensure we're creating the very best original reports, news stories and blogs, and it's great that the rest of the British media scene are sitting up and taking notice," Carla said.

Last November, The Huffington Post UK was honored by the Lovie Awards with a Gold Award in the news category.
