Paying It Forward... While Running the 2013 NYC Marathon

Nov. 3, 2013, marked the end point for a two-year mission for a group of individuals at AOL. Our feet hit the pavement beginning in Staten Island as we fought the bitter cold and wind running across the Verrazano Bridge – through the lively streets of Brooklyn – into the borough of Queens – down the three miles of Manhattan's party central 1st Ave. – into the quiet streets and bridges of the Bronx and then back into Manhattan for the torturous (and hilly) final four miles to the finish line...and we did it – all 26.2 miles for Rory!

This mission started back at the beginning of 2012. The AOL Sales Team started out the new year with a Sales Conference kickoff during which I won the first Rory Wheeler Courage Award. Rory was a former colleague in the Detroit office who lost a 20-month battle with cancer on July 25, 2011. Winning the Rory Wheeler Courage Award was one of the proudest moments of my professional career. I had never felt so proud and honored in my life, and although Rory and I had never worked directly with one another – I knew this award would impact my life in some intangible way.

I began a rapport with Rory's parents Bob and Karen as well as his wife Kristen and after each email and conversation, I felt a lingering need to ensure that Rory's memory would live for years to come in a way that helped people, in a place that's special in nature and by doing something Rory would have loved. With that, I worked with the Ronald McDonald House in New York City in my efforts to "pay it forward." I created a NYC Marathon team to raise money for the operating costs of the house and renovations of their music room. Knowing Rory's love of music, I thought this would be the best place for his spirit to live on.

I recruited 29 AOLers from across four offices in the U.S. and our training began. Some of these runners knew Rory, knew of Rory or didn't know him at all – yet they were all committed to putting a lot of their personal life on hold to run this race for a great cause. Amid much anticipation, the 2012 NYC Marathon never happened due to Hurricane Sandy but the troopers on the AOL Marathon Team committed to training yet another year. In the end, I'm proud to say, with a handful of injuries, 22 of us ran and this AOL Team in total raised more than $115,000! (Our team site is still live.)

This week I had our final "team" meeting at the RMDH with our Architect, Designer, Construction Aids and Project Manager who confirmed we'll break ground within the next two weeks and start the creation of the Rory Wheeler Music Room at the RMDH in NYC.

Although I'll never fully understand why Rory has become such an impactful figure in my life, he's an angel on my shoulder who has helped me do something wonderful for my AOL family, the Wheelers, the RMDH in NYC and more importantly, for myself.

AOL Launches New Docu-Series, city.ballet.

AOL has launched its newest documentary series, city.ballet., offering a rare behind-the-scenes look at the day-to-day lives of the elite roster of artists who perform with the New York City Ballet.
Conceived by executive producer and NYCB board member Sarah Jessica Parker, and produced by Pretty Matches Productions and Zero Point Zero Production, city.ballet. offers fans an all-access pass into the country's largest and most prominent dance company. Each 6-8 minute episode in the 12 episode series, narrated by Parker, takes viewers through a dancer's journey both on and off the stage.

In addition to rare footage of NYCB Company Class, rehearsals and performances, the series will provide access to many of the more than 90 dancers who perform with the Company, including visits to their apartments, physical therapy sessions, and a glimpse into their lives in New York City.

Also included in the series are interviews with NYCB Ballet Master in Chief Peter Martins and dancers such as Principals Jared Angle, Tyler Angle, Ashley Bouder, Megan Fairchild, Robert Fairchild, Chase Finlay, Sara Mearns, Tiler Peck, Amar Ramasar, Teresa Reichlen, Adrian Danchig-Waring, and Andrew Veyette; Soloists Craig Hall, Megan LeCrone, Lauren Lovette, and Georgina Pazcoguin; and Corps de Ballet members Harrison Ball, Silas Farley, Gretchen Smith, Giovanni Villalobos, and Claire Von Enck.

New York City Ballet's 2013-14 season will continue with the Company's annual performances of the beloved holiday classic George Balanchine's The Nutcracker™, which will take place from November 29, 2013 through January 4, 2014 at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center.

The series is now available at cityballet.com and bonus footage and content, including one-on-one interviews with the dancers and Parker, will also be available throughout the season.

AOL Hosts Social Media Week Panels in NYC!

Each year for the last three, AOL has been proud to be a part of Social Media Week taking place in New York City. This year, we are excited to work with with creative agencies DDB and Tribal DDB to host an exclusive series of panels and workshops at our New York headquarters for Social Media Week. Covering everything from gaming to music, customer service to social upheavals and everything in between, there is something for everybody to engage in.

The best part? It's open to everyone! Therefore, we not only invite you but encourage you to sign up, speak up and share our great program with clients, colleagues and friends of social media. It's all free.

PawNation Event Draws Pet Crowd to Park


The PawNation Pet Rally was a purrrrr-fect success, taking place in New York City's Tompkins Square Park this past Saturday, April 14. Featurinh more than 400 dogs -- and cats, the event was sponsored by AOL and BermanBraun to celebrate the official relaunch of PawNation. The New York Post took notice of the event and PawNation which was recently named the Web's #1 Pet Content site* and the #2 Community Pet site,** also posted a recap.

PawNation columnist and YouTube star Randall, known for his narration of the viral "Honey Badger" video, emceed the Pet Rally and surprised and delighted the crowd all day with his infamous narration skills. Randall led participants in both a pet/owner lookalike contest as well as a pet pageant with competitive rounds testing pets' talent, runway walk, costume and kissability.

When not mingling with Randall or fawning over the puppies at the adoption truck, dog owners and their pets posed for glamour shots in front of a PawNation step and repeat, received paw-dicurs from Salty Dog Groomers and cuddled with Champ, Bayer's adorable puppy mascot. The North Shore Animal Adoption Truck was also on hand and found new homes for six lucky pets. Lunch for pet owners was provided by the Gorilla Cheese Truck and Eddie's Pizza Truck, and treats for pups came from Bocce's Bakery Bike.
