A chef, educator and global economic advocate take their places this week in the MAKERS.com showcase of women who are first in their fields. Their video stories join a growing archive of the women's movement first hand accounts through the leaders, opponents, and trailblazers who created a new America in the last half-century.
Gabrielle Hamilton is an author and chef/owner of Prune, a restaurant in the East Village in New York. Her writing has appeared in publications such as The New Yorker, The New York Times, GQ, Bon Appétit, Saveur and Food & Wine. In 2011 she released her autobiography "Blood, Bones & Butter," which Anthony Bourdain declared, "Magnificent. Simply the best memoir by a chef ever. Ever."
Dena Simmons is an activist, educator and also a student. She has traveled to Antigua as a health volunteer for the Directorate of Gender Affairs to provide better health services for Dominican women and received a Fulbright grant for her academic work studying teen pregnancy in the Dominican Republic. She's currently studying for her doctorate at Columbia University Teachers College.
Leilah Janah is the founder and CEO of Samasource, a nonprofit connecting people living in poverty to work through online tools.
