The AOL Autos Team Recruits Students to Design New Award

The AOL Autos team met with 50 students yesterday at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit to kick off the Technology of the Year Award Design Challenge (http://autos.aol.com/award). CCS was selected as the exclusive partner by AOL Autos VP and General Manager, Chris Eschenburg. These students are tasked with creating the physical award that will be presented to the winner at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

This award will represent both the technology and automotive nature of the competition and should represent quality and expertise in auto technology, placing it easily into a position highly respected and referenced alongside other awards in the automotive field.

The students at CCS are made up of experts in several trades: pottery, glass blowing, fabrics, metals, woodworking and more. The AOL Autos team will be revisiting the students on March 15th to review initial designs, and then the real fun begins. Students will then be provided the supplies and tools they need to make the pieces come to life.

The students have participated in similar design competitions, including the 2009 Chrysler Supplier Pentastar Award, Ford's Model T Design Competition and the 2012 Auto Flow theme creative. We are anxious to see what impressive pieces they come up with!

Davis Schools Win Big with Patch

A few weeks ago, we announced that a family in Davis, CA, had won our first Deck the House holiday decorating contest, and from the moment we made it public, we couldn't wait to give away the actual prize: $100,000 to the local school district in Davis! Kristy and Jim Powell's spectacular decorating of their home, known as "Candy Cane Court," is what brought home the gold - and the green! - for their community, and Friday night's presentation of the prize was just as exciting for us as it was for the Powells and the Davis students!

Claudia Huapaya
from our marketing team (a veteran Patcher) was on hand in CA to lead the way and make sure the event went off without a hitch. It was really exciting, both for Claudia and for all of us here at Patch, to hear that so many people at the game knew about the contest and the upcoming check presentation. Superintendent Roberson and Trustee Sheila Allen took the court during halftime to accept the $100,000 from Davis Patch Local Editor Justin Cox and the Powell Family. Superintendent Roberson put it best when he held the giant check overhead and said, "Hey kids, this is for you!" The crowd went wild.

I know we're the ones who gave away the money, but honestly, we feel like we're the ones who took home the big prize. It means the world to us to be to able to give back in a big way; it goes right to our mission of serving our communities whenever and however we can. And hey, all the better when there's a giant check involved - who doesn't love those?! Congratulations to Davis Schools from everyone here at Patch!

Meet the Winners of our AOL Employee Cause Contest

At AOL, we are in the business of helping people. We bring this value to life each and every day through our work with AOL Impact, a platform that has shined a light on hundreds of non-profits and the advertisers that support them. Much like our advertising offerings, AOL Impact uses our best-in-class assets and brands to inform, entertain and connect our audiences - in this case with charities. Based on the overwhelming feedback we receive internally about the AOL Impact program, we decided to let our employees get involved and tell US what non-profits we should feature. The result was our first-ever employee cause contest, and we're excited to share the results with you!

Due to an overwhelming amount of contest submissions, we decided it was too difficult to choose just one winner, so we opened it up to three! Our team of panelists judged based on the employee's personal connection, level of commitment, and expected future commitment to the charity. Our judges also considered the overall impact that the $5,000 grant will have on the submitted organization. The winners will each be awarded a $5,000 grant in their name to be given to their organizations in addition to pro bono advertising including a Daily Impact unit and blogging opportunities on Huffington Post Impact.

We're thrilled to announce our AOL all-stars:

Get Ready for the Holidays with Patch's "Deck the House" Contest

We couldn't be more excited about the launch of our new contest, Deck the House! In towns across America, residents are channeling their inner Clark Griswolds, and Patch is harnessing that holiday spirit by asking users to pull out the ladders and bring some holiday spirit to the neighborhood in the form of lawn reindeer, plastic Santas, and lights...and anything else that helps them "deck their houses"!

We're recognizing the best of these efforts, and perhaps most importantly, giving $100,000 to local public schools in the winning town. You can check out all the rules here, and we hope you'll submit your own photos and videos - and once the submissions start coming in, be sure to vote for your local favorites! Patch aims to bring neighborhoods together, and to give back in meaningful ways. This contest is an exciting and fun example of that, and of our commitment to support our communities in engaging ways Let the (reindeer) games begin!
